Yahoo has signed David Beckham as its first "global sports ambassador" to front an international ad campaign ahead of the World Cup and provide exclusive content.
The campaign, which kicks off in more than 20 countries tomorrow, is the latest extension of the $100m brand marketing push unveiled by Yahoo last September as part of a fightback against rivals including Google.
Beckham, initially signed to work with Yahoo until September, will start appearing in a major ad campaign. He is currently in South Africa with the England team in a non-playing role.
In the UK it will use poster sites, the London Underground and newspapers including Metro and London Evening Standard, but does not include TV commercials.
Beckham will also provide a range of exclusive content to Yahoo during the World Cup. None of it, however, will be delivered live, meaning no views on England games or wider performances; Yahoo said it had all been developed in advance of the tournament.
Yahoo will feature a David Beckham online channel where he will share experiences of playing in three World Cups.
After the World Cup he will start to deliver rolling content, including a weekly video and a number of chat sessions with users of Yahoo services such as messenger and Yahoo Answers.
"Yahoo has a true personal relationship with its users and is an online leader in sports content across the globe," said Beckham.
"Yahoo will allow me to interact one-on-one with as many football fans as possible talking about the game I love."
In April, Yahoo signed a deal to show highlights of the English Premier League online for the next three seasons, 2010-13.
Yesterday it announced a major social-media integration programme, including a tie-in with Facebook.

Will Carlos Tevez Win the Golden Boot?
For those who aren't aware, the Golden Boot is awarded to the footballer who scores the most goals in the Premier League. Currently the Argentinian player is in tied in forth place in the league with Wayne Rooney, Didier Drogba and Jermain Defoe ahead of him and Darren Bent tied.
If his background is any indication of his determination to succeed, then Tevez has a great shot at clenching the award. Despite his small 5'6" height, Tevaz dominated in the 2004 Olympic games, scoring 8 goals (including the winning one) and achieving gold for Argentina. He scored one goal in the 2006 World Cup.
His professional career has been controversial to say the least. He originally signed for £13.7m on the Corinthians in 2004 however soon after Iranian businessman Kia Joorabchian purchased Tevez' playing rights (illegal in the U.K.) However, due to some legal maneuverings, Tevez was loaned to West Ham at the start of the Premier League. Despite the disastrous start Tevez proved his mettle and scored the winning goal of the last game of the season, winning the "Hammer of the Year" award as chosen by West Hammer fans.
Since Joorabchian had purchased Tevez' playing rights, he was once again loaned out, this time to Manchester United. During that season Tevez appeared 34 times and made 14 goals helping to lead Manchester to the Championship League finals.
On July 14, 2009, Tevez once again switched teams, this time to Manchester United's cross town rivals, Manchester City for a reported £25million. This makes him the third highest paid player in the Premier League.
In mid-February, 2010, Tevez took a leave to return to Argentina due to the premature birth of his daughter. He returned from that leave to score twice again Chelsea and to declare his Golden Boot goal. Since sighing with Manchester City, Tevez has shown that he is an integral part of Manchester City's team. And his teammates agree.
Gareth Barry, Manchester City's mid-fielder feels that Tevez is an irreplaceable member of the team who is only just starting to reach his potential. And this might be true. Didi Hamann, former Liverpool and Manchester City midfielder believes that City is over-reliant on Tevez declaring "...they're not the same team without him." But Barry believes that Tevez' "never say die" spirit infects both the team and the fans and that he has the potential to be in the same class as a Rooney or Drogba.
But what about Tevez' competition, Rooney and Drogba? Second place Didier Drogba is second place in the league with 19 strikes (4 ahead of Tevez) while Rooney leads the pack with 23 strikes. Can Tevez catch up with less than 2 months left in the season?
Quite honestly, it's doubtful. Sure, he is a brilliant player. Talented and ambitious, and willing to do whatever it takes to win for Manchester City, Tevez still is up against Rooney - one of the best footballers in the world. And Rooney has just beaten his own goal of 23 strikes in one season while Tevez is 8 goals behind him. So at this point, unless a miracle happens (like Rooney, Drogba and Defoe dropping off the face of the earth), Tevez may just have to keep dreaming of that Golden Boot award.
Would Tevez have stood a chance if he had not chosen to take his leave of absence to return to Argentina due to the premature birth of his daughter? Perhaps he would have - however we just may never know. It's always nice to speculate however we will just never know if his hiatus made the difference.
Does he have the potential for next year? Yes. Carlos Tevez is a brilliant player. Barring injuries, he most likely has a long and prosperous career ahead of him, however, for this 2009-2010 football season, count on Carlos Tevez as being such a long shot on winning the Golden Boot Award that he's completely out of contention...............

South Africa 2010 World Cup Football
FIFA is back! After a successful 18th edition of the football's biggest international event, it's time for Africa! South Africa, also called the Rainbow nation, is the host country for the 19th FIFA World Cup. Starting June 11th, the focus would be on South Africa, both on and off the field. Here's a closer look at the country's preparations.
19th FIFA World Cup 2010 will feature 64 matches in all and these have been staged in ten different venues in nine different cities across the length and breadth of the beautiful Rainbow nation. In fact, this is the first time that an African country is hosting the World Cup.
The venues for the matches are Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, Nelspruit, Polokwane, Rustenburg, Pretoria and two different stadiums at Johannesburg. The preparations for this were started long back. Half the stadiums at the venues were built from scratch and other five were upgraded. The opening and the grand finale of the tournament have been staged at Johannesburg soccer Venue.
In terms of audience turnout and television viewership, FIFA is indeed one of the most closely followed sporting events around the globe. Irrespective of the fact whether the native country plays or not, the football World Cup has viewers drawn from all corners of world. This time around, the expected audience turnout is estimated to be close to 600 000. According to the estimated figures, FIFA 2010 is expected to leave gross impact of R93 billion on the host country.
However, this would not be a first for South Africa. The country has been hosts to a wide range of many major global sporting events in the recent past. As hosts, South Africa has successfully managed the Rugby World Cup in 1995, the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup, A1 Grand Prix in 2006, the 2009 edition of the Indian Premier League and also FIFA Confederations Cup in June last year. With an exceptional performance in these, the Rainbow nation has set high standards for itself and the country promises to make every effort to make it a grand success.
