Will Carlos Tevez Win the Golden Boot?

ill Manchester City Striker Carlos Tevez win the coveted Golden Boot? Well if he has anything to say about it, the answer is an absolute "yes". Tevez has recently said that one of his personal goals this season is to win the award.

For those who aren't aware, the Golden Boot is awarded to the footballer who scores the most goals in the Premier League. Currently the Argentinian player is in tied in forth place in the league with Wayne Rooney, Didier Drogba and Jermain Defoe ahead of him and Darren Bent tied.

If his background is any indication of his determination to succeed, then Tevez has a great shot at clenching the award. Despite his small 5'6" height, Tevaz dominated in the 2004 Olympic games, scoring 8 goals (including the winning one) and achieving gold for Argentina. He scored one goal in the 2006 World Cup.

His professional career has been controversial to say the least. He originally signed for £13.7m on the Corinthians in 2004 however soon after Iranian businessman Kia Joorabchian purchased Tevez' playing rights (illegal in the U.K.) However, due to some legal maneuverings, Tevez was loaned to West Ham at the start of the Premier League. Despite the disastrous start Tevez proved his mettle and scored the winning goal of the last game of the season, winning the "Hammer of the Year" award as chosen by West Hammer fans.

Since Joorabchian had purchased Tevez' playing rights, he was once again loaned out, this time to Manchester United. During that season Tevez appeared 34 times and made 14 goals helping to lead Manchester to the Championship League finals.

On July 14, 2009, Tevez once again switched teams, this time to Manchester United's cross town rivals, Manchester City for a reported £25million. This makes him the third highest paid player in the Premier League.

In mid-February, 2010, Tevez took a leave to return to Argentina due to the premature birth of his daughter. He returned from that leave to score twice again Chelsea and to declare his Golden Boot goal. Since sighing with Manchester City, Tevez has shown that he is an integral part of Manchester City's team. And his teammates agree.

Gareth Barry, Manchester City's mid-fielder feels that Tevez is an irreplaceable member of the team who is only just starting to reach his potential. And this might be true. Didi Hamann, former Liverpool and Manchester City midfielder believes that City is over-reliant on Tevez declaring "...they're not the same team without him." But Barry believes that Tevez' "never say die" spirit infects both the team and the fans and that he has the potential to be in the same class as a Rooney or Drogba.

But what about Tevez' competition, Rooney and Drogba? Second place Didier Drogba is second place in the league with 19 strikes (4 ahead of Tevez) while Rooney leads the pack with 23 strikes. Can Tevez catch up with less than 2 months left in the season?

Quite honestly, it's doubtful. Sure, he is a brilliant player. Talented and ambitious, and willing to do whatever it takes to win for Manchester City, Tevez still is up against Rooney - one of the best footballers in the world. And Rooney has just beaten his own goal of 23 strikes in one season while Tevez is 8 goals behind him. So at this point, unless a miracle happens (like Rooney, Drogba and Defoe dropping off the face of the earth), Tevez may just have to keep dreaming of that Golden Boot award.

Would Tevez have stood a chance if he had not chosen to take his leave of absence to return to Argentina due to the premature birth of his daughter? Perhaps he would have - however we just may never know. It's always nice to speculate however we will just never know if his hiatus made the difference.

Does he have the potential for next year? Yes. Carlos Tevez is a brilliant player. Barring injuries, he most likely has a long and prosperous career ahead of him, however, for this 2009-2010 football season, count on Carlos Tevez as being such a long shot on winning the Golden Boot Award that he's completely out of contention...............
